Removal of alcohol bans in Alice Springs is ‘drawcard’ to alcoholics

Northern Territory Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker says the “drawcard” to Alice Springs is the removal of the alcohol bans in the state, prompting the increase in crime.

“I welcome the visit of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister on the ground, I understand that they’re going to be engaging with a lot of people,” he told Sky News Australia.

“On Friday a takeaway license and on-premise venue was suspended, and there was another venue with a bottle shop which was closed on Saturday that had an immediate reduction of nearly 50 per cent of demand on police resourcing.”
