Turnell’s release a ‘reminder’ political prisoners in Burma need to be released

The release of Professor Sean Turnell is a “stark reminder” there are still “thousands” of Burmese citizens who “remain behind bars for peaceful acts of free expression”, according to Human Rights Watch Australia’s Asia Director Elaine Pearson.
“The international community really needs to keep up the pressure on the junta to call for the release of all political prisoners,” Ms Pearson told Sky News Australia.
“We haven’t seen any targeted sanctions from the Australian government since the coup last year; it’s been almost two years; this is in contrast to the UK, the US, the EU.
“It’s well overdue for Australia to join those countries,” she said.
